As the daughter of an artist, I have been creating art for as long as I can remember, and need to create something every day in order to feel whole. I have been sewing since I took home economics in junior high school in the 1950’s and quilting since 1976. I began making art quilts in the 1990’s and retired from full time employment in 2002 so that I could follow my passion and spend my time making studio art quilts. Since retiring, I have been working increasingly with fabric I’ve created which is very satisfying. The inspiration for my work comes from the interaction of color, place and nature. I create fabric with dye and paint and love the unexpected results that frequently occur. The work begins with the fabric which dictates its direction. My construction method is usually to machine piece and machine quilt although I sometimes find that the fabric alone is complete by itself as a whole cloth piece. I often work on a number of pieces simultaneously (sometimes working in series) because I work intuitively and need time to study the work on the design wall before deciding how to proceed to the next step. I sometimes add text as another layer, which can provide texture and meaning. I look for a balance of light, line, color, space and form. Eventually the piece tells me that it is complete. 1/11/09 |
